Baby's Breath
Reply:Gypsophillia.......Baby's Breath. You can keep them and let them dry in tissue paper and then use them at Christmas time for decorating. I use it on my Christmas tree...I put sprigs of it all over the tree...it's beautiful.
Reply:Yes they are baby's breath. I like to mix that with fern in the back ground. now I'm getting spring fever. there is 3 ft of snow outside.
Reply:babys breath, isn't that beautiful?

Why white flowers open up only in the night?

It is seen that the white flowers -like Jasmin open up only in the night and not during day time. It is mysteriuos

Why white flowers open up only in the night?
It is not mysterious at all .

The plants / flowers are pollinated by insects that are nocturnal ( They are on the wings and move about only during the night time just like some animals and some birds ).

To attract them during their flight these flowers bloom during the night time . Moreover they do not waste energy on attractive colors as these will be invisible .

Instead they have heavenly fragrance !!!

So one is astonished by this insect flower relationship .

What are the best all white flowers to use in a wedding?

My wedding is early Sept. in CA. Bridesmaids are wearing navy blue/black dresses. I would like to use all white flowers? Any thoughts?

What are the best all white flowers to use in a wedding?
just make sure to get them as fresh as possible if you use white, they tend to brown a whole lot eaiser.
Reply:Calla lilies are gaining popularity as wedding flowers. As long-stemmed flowers, they can be used as pageant bouquets (the kind that you hold along your arm), as single-stem bouquets, and in the more common round bouquets. I've also seen them in cascading bouquets, with some of the calla lilies pointing downwards. They also make lovely boutonnières for the gentlemen. Historically, the calla lily means "beauty" which fits in well with the wedding theme. Though they are not technically "in season" in September, most flower shops are able to get them through overseas imports or indoor nurseries.
Reply:gardeinas there beautifil and they have a strong pretty smell the whole room will smell like gardeinas and a very pretty flower
Reply:Calla lilies are beautiful! I've also seen white roses that look very beautiful as well. It all depends on your style and what you like.
Reply:I love carnations. The fragrance is lovely and the flowers are so happy looking.
Reply:I had roses with a small simple flower called stephanotis. Look it up online and see what you think.http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/284...

Looking for a flowering hedge with white flowers??

I live in florida, which is a zone 8, I believe. I wanted to do a white flowering hedge in the front of my house and then add bright punches of color to the front of the hedges with some flowers. Any ideas??

Looking for a flowering hedge with white flowers??
Privet also has a tiny white flower and grows quickly. Hibiscus makes a nice hedge and there are varieties from white through red shades. Azalaea can make nice hedges but doesn't continually bloom.
Reply:this makes me think of bridal spirea...
Reply:don't know if mock orange will grow there or not, but when I was growing up the neighbors had a mock orange hedge around the back yard. it had white flowers that smelled like heaven!
Reply:Everything that has been mentioned is great, it just depends on the height you want the hedge to get. And some of the plants don't flower all year. Encore azaleas flower for most of the year but a good rain usually distories the flowers, making a brown mess. Hydrangas need a lot of shade and not hot afternoon sun. Gardenias come in many varities. The regular gardenia gets six foot and the daisy only three. The daisy is my favorite because it keeps it blooms longer and is hardier than the regular. It is beautiful all summer and smells as pretty as it looks. I'm not sure but you might want to consider butterfly bushes too. They get huge, come in white, but also many other colors. They attract butterflies which is always a plus. I would have to check but I believe they might keep their leave all year in Florida.

For color full sun I suggest periwinkle or vinca (same flower). Lots of different color, loves the sun and doesn't require lots of water. Even here in Tennessee it comes back each year though it is listed as an annual. If you have shade consider impatiens, they are very pretty and come in lots of colors and sizes. Also they can be pinched back when they become leggy, and will bush out more. They do not like a lot of sun and will wilt if they don't get enough water.
Reply:gardenias would be nice if you lived in california, but since you dont a orleander white would be nice. WARNING the whole plant is toxis and may cause a rash when handleing
Reply:If the hedge is partial shade, you can go with azeala or a white hibiscus would do well in FL or maybe camelia? I might do hibiscus and camelia that way you get more flowering time. White lilac, but they tend to really get big, although mine aren't. Privet is supposed to flower, but mine doesn't. I think I'll rip it out.

Here's some web sites I enjoy.

www.parkseeds.com

www.waysidegardens.com

www.americanmeadows.com (mostly bulbs)

www.brecks.com

I love american meadows for their bulbs. You might plant some dwarf bearded iris in front of your white hedge, they come in all sorts of colors, gladiolas, although tall would really be nice there, different collors or maybe a white with red theme so you can plant a ground cover of blue in the summer like lobelia or something. If you don't like red white and blue every single summer for the 4th of july, there are many pretty colors. I like bulbs because you can plant them and just fertalize during growing and blooming and forget them! They just do their thing and then I plant annuals like marigolds, pansies, petunias and others to bring on the color! Depending on how much sun your front of the house gets, you have a lot of options. Go to the websites and browse through their different catagories and see what you like. They list the zone and you can grow almost anything in zone 8. OH! you might also put asiatic or oriental lillies in front of the hedge too! I have one thin but long planter that I TOTALLY redid last summer. The back half is shade and next to the garage and the front half is full sun. In back I planted hostas, astilbe and heleborus and will plant others. The heleborus won't do well in Florida, the seem to like to freeze and bloom in winter. Weird plants, but they are perfect for me! The other two bloom in spring and summer in the shade. In the sunny part out front I planted a long row of reblooming and bearded double iris. Then gladiolis will go in this spring. Then I have a mulittude of different tulips and daffodils, a frutilaria and then my asiatic and oriental lillies. in front of that I will have grape hiacynths, which are short and purple. So this is what is going to happen. In the spring, I'll have the daffodils come up and bloom with the hiacynth and then the bearded iris will bloom right after the tulips which are about the same time as the daffodils. There will be some overlap. Then in the late spring early summer I have the lillies to grace the garden and then the galdiolas in the summer and in the fall I will have some of the reblooming bearded iris and some autumn blooming crocus. Then it snows and only the heleborus I have on the side, the back and in the future front will bloom. Don't plant tulips in florida, they need a cooling off period and you don't get that cool there, lucky you! So I'm going to have rotating flowers interpersed with some annuals that I will plant. I'm going to try a gound cover of sweet allysium and lobelia I think.

Oh! The hydrangea is a white flowering hedge too, but it can be big. look at this one;

http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/store... I think you'll like this!

Look at the web sites I gave you to get some ideas and you can google "shrubs" or "hedges" and get a lot more sites to look at. Of course, you can order online too! Check out some day lillies and flowering ground cover and I think you'll come up with the perfect garden. It'll be a lot of work at first, but SO worth it when all you have to do is prune, water, fertalize and ENJOY! Good Luck! I'm so excited now for you!

P.S. also make sure you choose plants that like the same soil PH. Some like a more acid soil, as do the flowering plants and some like less. Some soil amendments and fertalizer will help you keep it how you need it.
Reply:Gardenias have white blooms and smell great! Also, consider azaleas, they come in white, red, pink and orange. An idea for flowers would be Gerber daisies, they come in the prettiest colors! Yellow, deep red and a coral color, look them up, they're gorgeous.

Gladioli, Lupins, hollyhocks are mixed colours but you could sow seed and weed out the colours you don't want.
Reply:You could try Dahlia's. They come in many shades of red %26amp; even black. You could also try some of the red dwarf roses. They do well in or out of pots.
Reply:Just pop to your garden centre... you will be spoilt with choice of everything. and probably will end up like me:i had to get there twice to collect everything that I've got. and a nice boy did explain me lots and lots of useful stuff. and if it wasn't for him i probably bought 3 times more than i did. but it is sooo much better compare to the grocery shopping! I don't tell you more.
Reply:Begonias, bizzie lizzies, petunias. All now come in loads of colours even red and white. gorgeous!
Reply:Impatiens, Zinnias, Gladioli, Lilies, Petunias, Yarrows, Phlox, they are easy to look after and available in red and white.

For climbing plant you can try Clematis, available in red and white too. If you don't know how to prune, just buy Clematis with Group 3 pruning, cause you just need to cut them hard 12 inches above ground each early spring and they will bloom from new growth.

Hydrange Hornli has red flowers, hydrangea Annabelle has white flowers. Easy perennials to maintain.
Reply:If you love roses. plant roses. Prune them in the late fall after the first frost, or early spring before the plants bud to just above thefirst bud point. You could fill in between them with petunias and snap dragons until the roses fill out, and if you livein the right zone, those plants might self seed.
Reply:Red and whiten Petunias

What white flowers are in season around June?

I am looking for white flowers that I can have in my bouqet next year! I live in Michigan and would prefer to find local flowers rather then having them shipped in. Also I want something a little different, no white roses please!

What white flowers are in season around June?
I'm not from your area so I cannot say for sure.I would check with a local garden center or even better a garden center/florist operation as they may buy local cut flowers for thier own use.

What is the exact date white flowers blossom in Japan?

I'm planning my first trip to Japan and I would like to be there during that week (between April and May) where white flowers blossom somewhere in Japan. Does anyone know what is that week for 2008?

Also, if you can give me tips for affordable accomodations

What is the exact date white flowers blossom in Japan?
It depends on where you are in Japan and the weather when it comes to Sakura. You might see them in March in Kagoshima, or well into May in Aomori. However if you go to Japan in April and have a rail pass, you are sure to catch them somewhere.
Reply:When saying 'white flowers' i hope you mean 'sakura' or cherry blossoms. They bloom in the beginning of april usually in the first couple of weeks. Starting from the south in [Okinawa] to the north [Hokkaido]. They only stay in bloom for several days so if you missed it where you arrived, better move up north. You can also view them in Washington, in front of the White House... hahaha!

To catch some Japanese culture. Bring a picnic blanket and load up on snacks and beers to have a taste of 'hanami' = having a picnic under blooming sakura trees.
Reply:japanese sakura and sakura in the us are totally different.

you better try ueno park (tokyo) or some other park.

i know ueno park is crowded but you better try.

around april 1~8. depends on temperature. you better stay march 28 ~ april 15 if you really really want to see cherry blossom in tokyo.

and you already got info about the cherry-blossom front.

you can go some other castles or temples too. there are lots of cherry blossom too. kyoto is very beautiful. color is different from tokyo's sakura.

kyoto's sakura season is little bit earlier than tokyo's.

have a nice trip ^_^

Trying to identify a tree with small white flowers?

There's some trees in our neighborhood that have small white flowers and have a kind of doughy scent. They've got fairly big leaves, and make good shade trees. Any idea what they are? We live in central Texas but I don't know if these trees only grow in this area or not.

Trying to identify a tree with small white flowers?
I have a link to a website that is great for identifying trees. It asks questions and you answer as they pertain to the tree. I have used it and it worked excellent. Hope it works for you.

www.fw.vt.edu/dendro/forsite/Idtree.ht...

On the link, click on Leaf Key and go on step by step. It is super simple.
Reply:take a picture of one and post it. it is hard to describe a tree. unless you say there is apples hanging from it.
Reply:Could be bradford pear, or white dogwood. They're blooming right now. Both nice trees.

What are the trees with the white flowers?

I live in Tulsa, OK and the place is covered in trees with white flowers. I have heard they are Bradford Pear trees, but some of them are HUGE (25-30 ft). Didn't think pear trees got that big. What kind of trees are these? I love the white flowers, but they smell really bad.

What are the trees with the white flowers?
They are Bradford pears. I have seen them as tall as 35 feet, but most are 20 feet. They do have an unusual smell. They were a very popular "small" tree during the 1980s and early 1990s, but are not used as much today. They were very popular in commercial landscapes.
Reply:Most Bradford pear trees reach 15 feet after 10 years so to be that tall, they have to be at least 20-30 years old. They have beautiful white flowers this time of the year and is widely grown in Tulsa.

Reply:a tree that large is in the pear family it is called an arstricate pear they grow very tall but the blooms smell really bad
Reply:REALLY huge and smelly? Does it have a leaf with fan shaped ribs? Could be a ginko.
Reply:They are indeed a Bradford Pear. They are in full bloom right now. Just over the state line in AR we have a similar to Dogwood Tree called a Sarviceberry. They strongly resemble the Dogwood. Our Bradford Pears are also in full bloom. You can tell a Bradford by it's distinct shape. It is more tapered than the random shaped Dogwood. Beautiful tree but just a so-so aroma to the flowers.
Reply:dogwoods?

White flowers?

I am getting married in May and my colors are white, dark blue and yellow. I want my bouquet to have white flowers tied with dark blue ribbon and my bridesmaids flowers to be a different color (maybe whites and blues?) tied with a yellow ribbon. (their dresses are dark blue) I'm having the darndest time finding white flowers that could be in a hand tied bouquet that are not calla lilies or roses. Any suggestions?

White flowers?
Gerbera Daisies, lilly of the valley, shasta daisies, crysanthemum, carnation, zinnia, there are lots

Reply:I know this has nothing to do with white but your color selection just screams to use forget-me-nots in your small bouquets. I know you said no roses but I can just picture a bouquet of white carnations, miniature roses, and forget me nots. Happy Day
Reply:Crysanthymums , maybe.

Check these..
Reply:I've seen bouquets with many different flowers. Some of the white ones I've seen are white Kansas gayfeather, Oriental lillies, Shasta daisies plus other types of daisy-type flowers, orchids, and carnations. They each looked lovely in their bouquet.
Reply:White daisies (they have the yellow centers) or carnations (which can be dyed with blue trim).

I think white roses or even yellow roses would be elegant for you though.

No stressing over wedding details. =)
