Looking for tree w/ crimson & white flowers (3/4" like dianthus. 20x20' no fruit. thick crackly bark.

I haven't found it in flowering cherries or peaches or crabapples. It was in the school grounds of a 100 yr old bldg. must be able to live in zones 4-6. blossoms are like carnations or dianthus but smaller, in clumps on the branch. very deep color.
